$120,000 going to 5 HISD schools

The Lowe's Charitable and Education Foundation is donating $120,000 to improve five Houston ISD schools on Thursday.

The money will buy building materials for a barn and pasture for the Chavez High School FFA, a life skills classroom for special-education students at De Zavala Elementary School, an outdoor classroom and parent center at J.R. Harris Elementary School, classroom renovations and campus beautification at M.C. Williams Middle School and a campus beautification project at Austin High School.

Preschoolers can get Head Start

The Gulf Coast Community Services Association is enrolling 3- and 4-year-olds in early education programs that begin in the fall.

The association enrolled nearly 2,000 students in Head Start programs last year and hopes to be fully enrolled by the end of the summer. The programs are free for children with disabilities and those from low-income families. The GCCSA operates 25 Head Start and Early Head Start programs throughout southeast Houston and Harris County.

Children receive medical and dental treatment, plus a nutrition program.
