NEW HOUSTON ISD SCHOOL NAMED FOR JENARD M. GROSS

The Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees has voted to rename the recently acquired I. Weiner Elementary School as the Jenard M. Gross Elementary School.

The school, at 12583 South Gessner Boulevard, will open in the fall of 2001.

In honoring Mr. Gross, chairman of the development committee of The Houston A+ Challenge, the school board said it chose to rename the school “because of Mr. Gross’s commitment to the preservation of urban school systems and philanthropic causes to the city of Houston.”

Mr. Gross also is a member of the Greater Houston Partnership Board Executive Committee and chairs the Partnership’s Economic Development Committee and the Education Policy Committee. He has supported school, civic and community activities and has served Texas Southern University as a member of the Board of Regents and as Foundation Chairman.

The Houston A+ Challenge is a not-for-profit that develops and funds school programs, professional development and leadership institutes to promote whole school reform and higher academic achievement by all students..
